Seventh grade advanced science students are doing an activity called Genius Hour. This is an hour of everyone doing projects on something they are interested in.
Students are able to choose their own topic and then use research skills to create a project such as a slide show.
Some projects include how cancer affects families, violence and bullying, how your feelings affect the heart, and animals in the ocean.
“Everyone chooses what they are passionate about, there are projects on sports, history, fashion, makeup, cloning and more,” science teacher Marie Wilbur said.
Vic Marago is creating a project on the history of gay rights.
“I learned more about my community and the people around me,” Marago said. “I like to have more control over what I learn and that’s important to me.”
Mrs. Wilbur said that she expects students to be able to go through the design process on something they are passionate about.
“It’s really interesting to see what seventh grade students are interested in,” Wilbursaid.
This hour happens once every Thursday. Advanced students that are in that class enjoy it.
“I find this really beneficial because when I get older I want to go to college and major in radiology,” Sophia Fitzpatrick said.
